Joseph Mercurio, 72, was killed around 10:45 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, after the vehicle he was driving crashed with a tractor-trailer on Route 9, talking down multiple power lines and closing the roadway for hours, said the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Mercurio, the owner of Mercurio Farms and Joseph Mercurio Books, both located in Garrison, was driving a white Jeep when he collided with the truck as he turned left off Snake Hill Roa in Garrison, the sheriff's office said.

During the crash, the tractor-trailer flipped, causing the power lines to fall.

Mercurio was talking at the scene before being airlifted to the hospital, police said. He later died at the hospital.

The tractor-trailer driver, who was also injured, was listed in stable condition.

Mercurio's wife, Jennifer, posted on Facebook following the crash: "I am horrified to report that my dear husband, Joseph Mercurio, died today as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident," she wrote. "He was the love of my life and the beloved father of our daughter, Eleanor."

A visitation has been planned from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, at the Clinton Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24. Burial is directly following at the Cold Spring Cemetary.
